Who stays at the youth hostel? Many people in different ages and from different countries stay at the youth hostel.
Should I book in advance? Yes, it is a good idea to book in advance, especially in the period from June and until August where the youth hostel often is fully booked. But if you are out hiking and just need one night in a comfortable bed and a shower do not hesitate to contact us - most of the time we can be at your service.
Do you accept credit card? Yes, the youth hostel can accept Dankort, VISA, Eurocard, Mastercard and Dinerscard.
Do you serve any meals at the youth hostel? No, you are in charge of cooking your own meals using the kitchen.
Do I get picked up in the airport or in the harbour, when I arrive? It is possible to buy this service.
How are the possibilities of getting the different meals? Despite making the meals yourself there are also several restaurants and cafes in the city.
How much do the different foods cost? Vegetables, milk products and other fresh foodstuffs, which have to be imported by flights from Denmark is more expensive than in for example Denmark. On Most of the other basic things the prices are almost identically with the Danish prices.
How are the possibilities for hiking? There are hiking routes in all levels of difficulty, which goes from a hike on half an hour to the old settlement of Sermermiut by the ice fiord, to hikes taking several days in the hinterland, along the ice fiord or all the way to the inland ice.
How do I get a hiking map covering the area? There are maps in the scale 1:250.000 and 1:100.000 covering the area. These maps can be bought for example in Nordisk Korthandel, but usually also several places in Ilulissat. The local orienteering club has got a very detailed map covering the nearby surrounding of Ilulissat and it is very useful for one- day- excursions. These maps can be bought at the hostel.
When is the best time for visiting Ilulissat? We will of course make the statement that Ilulissat is worth a visit any time. But you have to make clear to yourself what it is that you want to experience - is it Ilulissat in the winter or in the summer? Dog sledges, skiing and a beautiful nature covert in snow and ice is the winter in Greenland. Depending on the conditions of ice and snow the season for sledge rides starts in October and end in the beginning of May. Boat trips, hiking and a beautiful nature with vigorous fauna and ice bergs is the summer in Greenland.
What language do they speak in Greenland? Greenlandic is the native language and Danish is the second language, but many places you can do with English.
